review 1: A plague ("the sweats") has struck in many large centers around the world. Stevie is able to recover from a bout of the illness (is she immune?) and sets out to find out why her lover was murdered in his apartment. Futuristic, fast-paced, very compelling, but extremely grim. This is the first of a planned trilogy, and I'm not sure that I want to continue in order to find out what becomes of Stevie and human-kind.
review 2: I adore the diversity in Louise Welsh's work yet in each case, you become emotionally entangled with her amazing characters. Stevie is an under-achieving but driven tv sales girl, marching time in a dead-end job. When the apocalyptic virus strikes, her world and moral compass is turned upside down. Her rich and respected doctor boyfrien... mored appears to have been murdered and she uncovers astonishing secrets about him and his colleagues as society collapses around her. The impact on her sense of morality, fair play and ethics is made painfully and compellingly real by the author. Can't wait for the next part! less
