review 1: This was billed as a mystery, but I found this novel written as a literary tale and the real mystery was where is the mystery element of this story? At the very end there was a mysterious death and a skeleton, but the book certainly didn't meet my criteria for a well written mystery novel. None of the characters were particularly likable and I found it hard to care much about the story line and Murray's travails. It finally got kind of interesting when he went to the Island of Lismore, but by then it was too little too late as far as I was concerned.
review 2: Louise Welsh knows how to intrigue her readers and, like any good mystery writer, gives them enough twists and turns to keep them interested to the last page. But instead of using a professional (like inv
... moreestigator or detective) to get to the bottom of this story, she puts the research in the hands of a Professor of Literature on sabbatical, trying to write the story of his favourite poet's brief life for a book. Using this as the basis of the story, the people in his life also get tangled into the strange circumstances of the poet's life and death. For people like myself, who don't care much for the mystery genre, Welsh proves once again that you don't need to be a fan to enjoy her works. less

An academic mystery. Reminded me a bit of Kate Atkinson, but with less humour.

Not up my alley. Plodding, frustrating at times.
