review 1: A good novel for me is one that makes me think about it long after I've finished it. I keep coming back to the characters in The Girl on the Stairs by Louise Welsh. Was Jane paranoid and deceitful? Did her difficult childhood and current isolation make it reasonable for her to act the way she did? What were Petra and her brother really up to? Despite inconsistencies, some odd German and a melodramatic climax, Welsh kept enough things hidden and only hinted at to make this a psychologically thrilling read.
review 2: Such a disappointment after her excellent first novel (The Cutting Room). Ludicrous premise, cardboard characters, clunky language, ill defined plot twists. And, worst of all, the most rushed, silly and unsatisfactory ending I've come across for a ... morewhile. It reminded me of those disposable horror novels (family moves into a new, wonderful but slightly creepy home; mysterious neighbours lurk; strange doings unfold - mayhem ensues) that were churned out in the 1970s. Which is a shame, because I think Welsh has much more to offer. less
