review 1: As the title 'The Beach Cafe' itself implies, the storyline revolves around Evie Flynn, the self-proclaimed black sheep of her family who inherits her aunt Jo's cafe after her death. It shows how she's indecisive and unsure at first and paints the journey of Evie gradually changing, discovering what's really best for her and doing what she truly wants to instead of following the crowd or doubting herself. The book was average - nothing special or unique but it was relaxing and predictable. What I didn't quite like was how everything seemed to happen too easily for Evie. Any difficulties that she experienced were minor or were quickly resolved or were merely told, not shown. For instance, the current workers at the cafe weren't exactly competent or well-behaved but she easil... morey acquired better people who were competent and whom she got along with. Then despite not having any experience in the field, she managed the place pretty well and didn't have the usual sort of problems that places such as cafes have, such as complaints from customers. Plus, since her aunt's death, people still visit the cafe. You'd think the regulars wouldn't turn up as much because they doubt the food will be as good as before or the place would hold the same standards as when Jo was in charge. As for the romance aspect, it was pretty obvious from the start that she and Ed would eventually get together. The attempt to make Ed into the attractive, mysterious mould of character didn't work for me. He just came across as flat and boring and merely meant to be part of the whole everything-happens-easily-for-Evie. When details of his past were finally revealed and then resolved quickly, it made me feel that the whole thing was pointless. As for the side characters, I never felt like I truly got to know them. They were just names attached to characters. It's also so convenient that people like Rachel, Leah and Wendy suddenly appear, needing jobs and are willing to work there immediately.I would've liked it to be more realistic - show (not tell) Evie struggle with the cafe in terms of finance and attracting customers. Show how she learns to deal with difficult customers and stand up for herself during family gatherings etc. No doubt she ended up better but her transformation wasn't properly fleshed out. Her best friend Amber was alright but she seemed to be someone who's just in the story purely to help Evie when she's short-handed, to dish out advice and to be there for Evie when she's down in the dumps. Basically anyone could've replaced Amber.Overall, 'The Beach Cafe' was a decent and pleasant read - the setting sounded lovely but it could have been improved in terms of realism and characters.
review 2: Lovely, a total fluff-fest from beginning to end. With easily predicted plot lines and loveable characters, what's not to like? (Especially for 59p on Kindle!) You know exactly what you're getting with this kind of fiction. I always love stories where a character moves away from an unsatisfactory situation and starts afresh. She has confrontations with the locals, meets other, more supportive, people and generally makes a huge success of the new venture. This is pure fabulous escapist fiction. My only dislike is the amount of f words in the first part. It jars in easy read candy floss fiction like this, I don't think it's necessary.I recommend Jenny Colgan's The Little Beach Street Cafe or Rosie Hopkins Sweetshop, or The Cupcake Cafe is you want similar. less

An easy summer read - predictable but the main character is such a good person - it's nice to read.
