Such a perspective – 
to take in the sights
of our everyday
Wonderland-
and then kinda kick
it back to you in
some amusing form
is our job here at the
Muscleheaded Blog.
I don’t know about the
sealing wax thing, and
I ain’t much on cabbage,
but you get the idea.
My email has been relatively
quiet lately, but I did get
a nice note from a new reader
asking about what makes us
choose the pieces of art that
we feature.
She felt some of the
art work and references
were ” out of step ”
with the current times.
And I have to agree,
and one of the main
reasons we post it.
It’s all about
perspective, man.
Historical
or otherwise.
No point of view
comes out of a
societal vacuum.
And art has always been
a strong influence on,
and reflection of,
the development
of the larger culture,
and the varying
perspectives within it.
To understand
where you are,
understand where
you came from.
Whether the mirror
reflects something you like,
or something more like
that year you took to
wearing polyester
leisure suits,
isn’t about
anybody else
but you and the way
that you look at it.
And hey,
that powder blue
does go with your eyes.
Just sayin.
Now,
then —
Today’s post revolves
around a lovely set of
48 cards published by
Thomas De La Rue
Company in London
around 1898.
It was marketed as a
“Alice in Wonderland”
card game based on
original designs by
Sir John Tenniel-
— the illustrations
appeared originally in
“Alice’s Adventures
in Wonderland”
by Lewis Carroll,
in it’s 1896 edition.
According to the rules of
the game, there were
16 ‘sets’ of three,
with the first card
in each set determining
the role of the set in
game play.
Not a card game fan myself,
I still love the look of
these vintage cards —
and I think they have
the potential to really
speak to the little
adventurous kid that still
lives within all of us.
