review 1: This book is a delight, from beginning to end. It is quickly paced with streaks of humor, but don't let it fool you into thinking it's a lightweight. There's a lot of juicy information and research here. Worsley's passion for her subject matter is downright infectious. I've never read Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey series before (mostly because I read The Nine Tailors and was not impressed), but if I enjoy them half as much as Worsley clearly does, I'm in for a treat. But, in spite of her obvious preferences, Worsley still does her diligence and quotes those who didn't like Sayers and pointed out her faults. A fun book for all lovers of the traditional British murder mystery.
review 2: Fascinating intersection of literature and social history, as Worsley
... moreanalyzes how the move from an agrarian/rural lifestyle to an urbanized, industrial society in England led to a rise in anonymity and the need for a detective force. She notes how this is chronicled in the works of authors from Dickens and Wilkie Collins, through the short stories published in The Strand, and on to the Golden Age of detective fiction. Her chapters on Christie, Sayers, Marsh, and Allingham inspired me to start rereading Miss Marple! Companion book to the BBC series "A Very British Murder." less
