review 1: Fascinating and well written story of life in the Royal court of George the second of England .Focused on several persons in the court that appeared in a painting in the Kensington Palace . The courtiers had to observe strict rules of etiquette, the women had to uncomfortable garb that weighed @ 20 pounds, and the pecking order was constantly changing. The family life of the royals was in disarray, the king was expected to have mistresses and his wife was expected to be chaste.Their relationship with their children was strained. Not a fun place to be .Quite a bit like a gilded cage.
review 2: Reading this novel is just like having Lucy Worsley talking in your ear. It has the same mix of entertainment and mischievousness. If you're a fan of Lucy on TV
... more, then you will invariably like this book. Hugely educational, it's an effortless joy to read, glossing over the obviously enormous amount of research it took to write this book. A good companion to the recent TV series, but with more detail. I look forward to catching up on the author's other books. less

Best book on the Georgian period since J.H. Plumb's studies. Happy Anniversary, house of Hanover.
