review 1: This is a great book to follow on the heels of "The Crimes of Paris," because the role of the criminal is venerated in a completely different way when comparing the English culture to the French. I've read about some of the famous crimes outlined in the early book, but I was most intrigued about the crime and detection writers, who were mostly female, between the World Wars. This book is a must for the fan of true crime and detection writing.

The broadsheets were early and cheap versions of tabloid press that gave all the facts (real and not so real) about the murder, the victim and the killer. The book covers the starts of the mystery genre and how real facts are sometimes used as the base for these stories. I highly recommend this book. less
