review 1: This was book #3 of this author for me. I like his writing. Quite an "adventure" story. The characters are developed nicely and I have a feeling for them. Altho I am not able to pronounce most of the names, I am able to work around that a problem. Nateli and her girlfriends plus Tacho were quite a group. They really showed lots of nerve and stick-to-it-ness in their adventure. Atomiko was aninteresting addition and turned out to be an "odd-ball" but rather protective.I was able to skip over the mexican speaking parts without losing the story. The description of the areas they traveled was very real. Luck was with them along the way as well. Somehow I knewthat the quest for her father was not going to end up well. The ending was good and left a nice feeling.I believe it w... moreas last year or so that I had the pleasure of hearing the author read a section of hisbook, Hummingbird's Daughter. Excellent!
review 2: 'Into the Beautiful North' has a heartwarming, screwball quality to it that I greatly appreciated. Believable? Not particularly. Did I care? Not at all. Despite its deceptively lighthearted tone, it addresses aspects of contemporary Mexican culture (narcos, poverty, the border culture, illegal immigration, etc.) that are all too real. It also brings up the rough treatment that Mexicans (even the legal ones!) receive in the United States, despite the pains that they take to immigrate there to work the crappy jobs that no one else wants to work. Those who do not speak any Spanish (fortunately, I do) and are not at all acquainted with Mexican culture may find themselves a little lost. The Spanish words or dialogue scattered throughout are not always translated or explained. However, it is still a delightful story and well worth reading for those who want a glimpse into the complicated relationship between Mexico and the USA. less
