review 1: I just couldn’t get into this one. Even once I’d worked out what was going on, I still found that the amount of concentration and effort needed to find my way through it simply wasn’t rewarded. The book is billed as a novel – but even Ruffato himself admits that it really isn’t, but rather a series of vignettes or fragments depicting one day, (5/9/2000) in the Brazilian capital Sao Paolo. The lack of structure apparently reflects the impossibility of reproducing the complexity of the city, and is an homage to its dynamic and diversity. The lack of a coherent narrative and the non-linear nature was for me a problem, and although some of the vignettes stood out, on the whole I couldn’t relate to any of them. The book has been much praised, so perhaps the fault is... more mine, but essentially I found it unreadable.
