review 1: If you like a complex, gritty, grimdark world with lots of magic, violence, betrayal and action, then rush out and buy this great debut novel by a gifted writer. The world is exceptionally well fleshed out, the characters are complex and realistic, the action is frantic and abundant, the magic is, well, awesome! There is humor, disappointment, tragedy, victory, and the plot keeps you unable to put down the book. The story is original, in that the gods are dead, killed by the Mage Lords in a holy war, and now the remaining Mage Lords have divided control of a world that is slowly decaying. I don't do spoilers, but lets just say everyone is not happy with that arrangement, and some people are willing to fight. A great addition to the fantasy/grimdark genre, and I am excited ... moreto read the next book. Fans of Mark Lawrence, Brian McClellan and Jeff Salyards should love this book.
review 2: The Grim Company is a solid debut from Scull. Featuring a motley crew of characters, the reader is treated to high octane (and at times gruesome) action that sucks you in and refuses to let go. Scull wields humour and sarcasm deftly throughout the novel, and I found myself chuckling out loud many times whilst reading. If I had one small complaint it would be that I wanted more exploration of the world he has created. However, Scull has impressed me with this book, and I continue to be amazed at the writing talent that has emerged from Great Britain following the success of Abercrombie and Lawrence. I look forward eagerly to Sculls next book.4 out of 5 stars. less
