review 1: I don't mind multiple point of views, especially if I'm "into" each view. The danger an author courts is when he writes one point of view so much better than the others, the story ends up competing with itself and you find yourself, the reader, skipping over chapters to get back to the POV you enjoy. The good thing about this book was that I eventually went back and read the other POVs too.I've noticed a few other reviewers have thrown the Joe Abercrombie name around, and certain POVs had me thinking that Mr. Scull could actually be Joe's little brother. The Barbarian and the Halfmage were the interesting POVs for me. Fortunately there wasn't too much filler in between their chapters, and the book moved along at a pretty good pace.I will gripe that there was a certain en... moregagement that happened off screen that I felt should have been hashed out in print. To keep it general and out of spoiler territory, I'll just say the North Sword at the Channel.Fairly typical fantasy saga/epic with enough going on to keep me interested, but enough "warning signs" to keep me wary about committing too early to the entire series. Knocked off a star because by the end of the story, I found my self skimming pretty heavily over stuff that seemed fairly predictable.Definitely a library type pickup.
review 2: I had a little trouble getting into this book because I found some of the main characters completely unlikeable. But as the book progressed, the plot pulled me forward and a few of the characters won my heart. Also as the story unfolded and connections were made, I found myself turning the pages faster. What seemed a simple war caused by power grabs is revealed as a more complex conflict with roots in ancient wars and fallen gods. By the time I finished the book I knew I would be very anxious for the second one. less
