review 1: While Coady has a believable character in Rank, and writes with absolute authority of voice, it did take me a while to truly invest in the book. I almost put the book down after the first few pages, but am I ever glad I picked it back up! By the time I had, oh, a dozen (?) pages, I was hooked. I finished this book at 3 am the morning after the afternoon I started it. It was well worth every bag under my eye the next day. If you're looking for a hard-hitting novel that asks how personal identity hangs on the expectations others impose on us, read this. While the book is not Y.A, I almost think it should be course material for all young men 16 +
review 2: This didn't work for me. The trick to offering an unsympathetic protagonist is that he somehow, sneakily, mus
... moret become sympathetic anyway. But I never much cared for, or even liked, "Rank," or for that matter any of his friends. Nearly everything about the novel missed the mark for me: the drama wasn't dramatic enough, the comedy not funny enough, the revelations not...revelatory enough. Thoughtful themes and reflections abound, but they don't make up for a sometimes tedious plot. less

Took a while to get into and ended a bit strange, but there where some good bits in between!

Very original; a little long but really a good read about a very complicated 'big guy'
