review 1: This book was a great read for younger kids. I love the concept of a girl that is overprotected going on an adventure. I also love that she meets an orphan and gains social knowledge on how to react and act towards other children. Lynne Jonell did an awesome job on creating the paradigm of Christina's personality. She can only view the other children through her window and observe what they do. That is the extent of her social knowledge in the first of the book. Jonell does the story good by combining quantum physics with minerals to create a harsh environment for the orphans. I would love to live in a house that has a bunch of twists, tunnels, and passages to new places.
review 2: The Secret of Zoom is a read that you have to stick with, in my opinion, t... moreo really "get". I started reading this with my group of fourth grade boys at a really bad time of the year. We were constantly being interrupted for long periods of time because of things like spring break, testing, etc. I had a hard time following the story and keeping the characters straight - especially Leo and Lenny. However, the boys loved it and always seemed to remember what had happened and what we were waiting to read next. Jonell writes with great amounts of detail and definitely paints a plethora of vivid scenes throughout this story. I appreciate that the main character is a girl in this fantasy writing, while the secondary lead character is a boy. I also enjoyed reading about orphans in a way that told some truth and still gave hope. I have yet to talk to a student that has not enjoyed this book, so I am crediting my own lack of zest for it to the length of time and choppy-nature of my reading schedule as I got through it. less
