Devil of the Highlands
review 1: Kilts, killings and kisses ye ken?A farcical romance with a lot of slapstick comedy as a young women is engaged to the "Devil" of the Highlands. The Duncan doesn't communicate well and some of the conversations with him and Evelinde were like an Abbott and Costello bit. Total miscommunication. She keeps thinking how important first impressions are and each time she meets someone new she is in a ridiculous situation. Despite her clumsiness, she is intelligent and enamored of her laird and wants to solve the mysteries of the deaths of 3 of his clan. Do actions speak louder than words? That is the Devil's philosophy and it doesn't work that well at the beginning of the marriage. The mystery was a bit complicated with a lot of references to the dead characters and ot... morehers who were no longer around which made it a bit tricky to ken at times. I liked that when he compared his wives he didn't disparage the first one, and described both their bodies beautiful yet different. There is a great review written as a diary entry by Devil. Don't miss that. But read it after you read the book.
review 2: Actions speak louder than words. It's hard to remember that. Sometimes, in this day and age all you want to do is hear the words. Maybe it's because people are less and less inclined to show their actions. Evelinde would do anything to get away from her step mother. When she learns that her step mother would do anything to make her life miserable which includes betrothing her to the Devil of Donnachaidh. Evelinde takes this news in stride. She really knows how to go with the flow. I find it refreshing that most times you read a historical about a betrothal and the girls are running away or not hearing of the wedding. At least those are the ones I've read. So when I come across a book and the lady just goes with the flow its exciting to say the least. I honestly can say that I had no idea who was behind all the murders. This one wasn't easily predictable. I wasn't sure who the culprit was. Which kept me in the story. We didn't really learn much about Cullen or even Evelinde but I still enjoyed the story and the mystery. One thing I hated though was every time something happened to Evelinde, Cullen was there to carry here to their bedroom. Um... c'mon. She's a grown woman, she can walk. Most times she wasn't even hurt. Either way, I still enjoyed the story and want to continue with the series. less
