review 1: Got off to a slow start with a character hard to care about, but really gathered momentum. In the end, I truly found it engaging & and read it right through in one sitting. Marvelous attention to details. Not high art, but a decent page-turner and admirable storytelling. Might not be a book a man would put high on his list. A decidedly woman- centered book about problems and choices women make & how sisterhood matters.
review 2: TRAPS has a narrative structure following four separate stories that intersect and come together as the novel approaches its climactic scenes. Theme is what ties the stories and characters together. Think of the films CRASH or SIDE EFFECTS. Bezos handles the technique well. She creates distinct narrators, each with her own story arc. No
... morene of the situations are overly original, but once she zooms in from a camera-like narrative distance and gets close to the characters, each shines in her own way and Bezos expertly delves into their lives. The camera POV also results in some tedious physical descriptions. The male characters—none of whom have a voice—lack dimension and complexity; they are either too good or too bad. Overall, the novel kept my interest because the dilemmas the characters faced kept my interest. less
