review 1: I really enjoyed this very short story. It's about marriage, love, commitment, and supporting each other. It is a lesson we could all learn from. After being married for a few years, both of their children were off to school and camps, and having never taken a holiday together, an opportunity arises that allows them to have A Week in Summer to travel...however, it is only on an agreement that they do this. Brian has a lot of talents and has had many jobs and therefore, the family has moved a lot in order to follow his needs for work. Kathleen is a baker. She bakes food and delivers it to the homes of women who pass it off as their own masterpiece. After Brian loses his teaching job, depression finds him. That's when Kathleen feels it is time to take that long desired... more holiday. But, Brian has terms, as he doesn't want to go. Kathleen agrees. In order for Brian to agree to go on this week long holiday, Kathleen must agree to give him time. Time to figure himself out, just time...Kathleen, being in charge of the plans, decides to seek the help of the Snappy Seniors' Travel Agency. After turning down several ideas, it is decided that they will travel to Ireland, following her roots. In Ireland, Brian finds something in himself and Kathleen sees the color return to her beloved. He is awakened. You will love the characters and the story line, it is written in Maeve Binchy's usual beautiful style. Her wit will make you laugh. You can find yourself relating to these 'real life' characters and their feelings, emotions, and thoughts. I have this book on my Kindle, however, I listened to it on Audible (it is only 33 minutes long) and really enjoyed it. Maeve Binchy reads it herself, which, to me, is a real treat. She reads it so perfectly and as the author, she has the ability to add so much more to the story. I highly recommend this book be added to your ever growing tbr list.
review 2: I didn't read the whole title, and I expected a book with several short stories. There was only one story, about a couple who were very much in love, but the husband was feeling very low. The couple had never taken a vacation, and the wife thought her husband could be helped by taking one. She could have gone on vacations by herself over the years, but she wanted to go with her husband. She went to a travel agent, who specialized in vacations for older adults. They need up going to Ireland, and joining in group classes. They stayed up late talking with the friends they had made. They discussed poetry. They took dance lessons. The sparkle comes back into her husband's eyes. He decides he will share his poetry, instead of hiding it. The wife decides they will come again the next year. less
