review 1: Maeve's winning formula -- 1) create a bunch of characters, 2) provide all their backstories, and then 3) plop them all into one location to interact. She excels at this style of writing. In her previous books she's plopped her characters into an Italian language class, a hospital, a restaurant. For 'A Week in Winter' the location is a Bed & Breakfast on the west coast of Ireland. The Irish charm oozes off of every page - and while it's a wee bit too "cozy" for my taste, it was a nice, calm diversion. We read this for my book club and everyone liked it. The writing world lost Maeve Binchy in 2012. She will be missed.--Victoria
review 2: Book Club Discussion BookTypical Maeve Binchy book. For some reason her writing grates on me but I can't seem to stop readin
... moreg one of her books once I start. On the other hand, I never voluntarily pick one up (book club book here, remember).Books in which main characters have the names Chicky, Queenie, Nasey, Rigger tend to be Lifetime TV type of books ... definitely true here. I don't mean to sound as negative as I come across. The book is a quick read with plenty of a life-affirming sentiment - poor choices in life faced and challenges met. Irishness oozes from its pages. You could do worse. A reluctant three stars. less

Irish Country House turned Inn hosts a stereotyped range of characters.
