A Scout Davis Investigation
review 1: This book was a lot of fun. A good light read perfect for a lazy summer day.Scout Davis is a freelance journalist living in Byron Bay. She agrees to look into a cult that has moved from the US to Australia and goes undercover to find out if the cult is phony or not. At the same time she is helping her sister, a teacher at an exclusive private school, solve a puzzle involving slashed underwear in the girls change rooms.3.5★
review 2: First off, I find this book gets recommended to fans of Janet Evanovich and/or Alexander McCall-Smith. Which is fine. But if you, like me, are not a fan of either of those authors, don't let that put you off - there are a lot of reasons to like this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.The Guerilla Knitters' Institute pulled me in to
... morethis book. Scout, the main character, is a member of this deeply covert and slightly illegal group who graffiti parts of Byron Bay using yarn. The scenes with this group are hilarious, and should appeal even to non-knitters (no technical knowledge is required). Scout is also a Type 1 diabetic, and I feel the author has incorporated this aspect seamlessly. Like all diabetics, Scout can never take a day off from being diabetic, and so her investigative journalism has to be carefully planned to allow for blood sugar maintenance and insulin shots. I particularly liked the fact that Scout's diabetes is never used to create gratuitous drama - it is a fact of life for the character and is treated as such. The secondary characters are drawn with loving skill: Harper, Scout's older sister; Sam, Scout's 21-year-old nephew; Rafe Kelly, the attractive police officer; and a host of colourful figures around Byron Bay and the Gold Coast. And just in case you were thinking it sounds like a complete 'cozy', Scout has to investigate both a strange cult that recently moved in to the Gold Coast (complete with anonymous tip-offs about very dodgy practices) and a deeply disturbing scandal at a private girls' school. less

It's not meant to be deadly serious, but it's very engaging, almost seamless, and not stupid.
