review 1: In this story, the end is given at the beginning and then we flashback to an earlier time and come gradually forward to find out how this event occurred. We follow the thoughts and actions of the people involved, directly or indirectly, and see the threads entwine to ultimately form the rope that would hang the woman of the title, 'the second-last woman in England' to be hanged. A very good read, it holds you in thrall from the start. A couple of years ago I read Maggie Joel's "The Past and Other Lies" and was utterly disappointed by it but I am happy to say that this book was very satisfying.
review 2: A book review was the reason behind me reading this novel and I am glad that I did. From the very beginning I knew there was a murder but it was no question of
... more who did it, just the question of why. The plot then took twists and turns and I just had to keep reading to find out what happened next. Why did Mrs Wallis shoot her husband? Why did Nanny Corbett only apply to work at one house? Who was the man who kept turning up in Mrs Wallis's life? This was a well written novel that shows when it comes to family matters, blood is always thicker than water. less

Mostly set in postwar London, in the lead up to the Queen's coronation. Great mystery story.
