review 1: I thoroughly enjoyed this book but I didn't love it, if that makes sense. I missed some of the characters I'd come to know and love in the first 3 books. There were new characters that I liked However the story was still fast paced and exciting. I found myself holding my breath more than once! If you enjoyed the first 3 books, I recommend reading this one as well. Just don't have your hopes set too high.
review 2: Mainak Dhar crafts another fine tale following the fate of Alice. Hunting the Snark brings Alice to the wilderness of the U.S. after things take an unforeseen turn close to the Deadland. If you are a fan of the original trilogy, this episode is a "must read".While I definitely enjoyed Hunting the Snark, there were a few flaws. While previous tales
... morehave been tightly focused geographically, this one literally crosses oceans and continents. That is fine, but on several occasions Mainak moves from one location to another abruptly and with no indication in the text that it occured. Sometimes, there wasn't even a chapter break or sub-break. At the end of one sentence you are on the west coast and the next sentence is in the Midwest. It isn't until things stop making sense that the reader realizes that a jump in time/location has occurred and then I had to figure out where/when we were in the story and sometimes go back a few paragraphs to regain context. Break headers telling the reader the location would have greatly helped clean this up.Another problem was that I felt a lack of respect for the great distances required to travel throughout the war-ravaged U.S. I appreciate that Mainak kept the focus on the primary story, but the travel required in this story would probably have needed many months if not something approaching years.All-in-all, I loved this story and am looking forward to reading more from Mainak. less
