review 1: Katherine has been raised by her father to believe her only worth is her beauty. Her younger brother will be Ruler when their father dies, she is merely a Princess to be wed to further the needs of the Kingdom. Her father is dying and her brother needs more time before he is old enough to rule. Already relatives are jockeying to be named Regent. Katherine and her father agree that the new Regent will use their power to become leader, either kill her brother, or have legislation passed.Katherine had been promised to a Sheik's son. But 5 years ago he and his father died in an assassination. The current Sheik - Zahir - survived the assassination. But losing his father and brother, and bearing scars, a limp, and nightmares has earned him the name the Beast of Hajar.Kath... moreerine, after about 5 years from the time of the death of her promised, Zahir's brother, travels to see Zahir and lays out a logical argument as to why he should honor the marriage contract in his dead brother's stead. 1st to protect her brother, to be his Regent until he is old enough to rule, thus avoiding a civil war in her country. 2nd, with civil war in her country, Hajar would be denied the trade that usually took place between their countries. Zahir fights her at every turn. Eventually they agree to a loveless marriage that will end shortly after her brother ascends his throne. Then she can return to her country and marry for love. Zahir has no intention of making her his wife in any way but in name only. He is plagued by nightmares and worries he would hurt her, maybe even kill her in the midst of one of his horrible dreams. But he hadn't realized how attracted to her he would become. They wed in her country and he is angered by the way she is treated by her father and others in her own country. For Katherine he finds himself fighting his demons for her. Wanting to be a better man for her. He realizes he loves her. When they become intimate, his nightmares start to fade, but hers begin. He can't keep her he decides. She has given him light in his darkness, while he has darkened her lightness. Loving her more than himself, he demands that she leave and return to her homeland. Not being able to face watching her pack up and leave, he takes off for 3 days. But he finds Katherine is still there when he returns. They finally talk through their fears and their desires for a future and together they make choices to bring them both the light and the legacy they each deserve.
review 2: HQP that I picked up for free on amazon, I was in the mood for a good little category romance - which, yes can be formulaic and sometimes really kinda bad but like junk food, sometimes you just have a craving. Plus, I had read another Maisey Yates book (Crazy, Stupid Sex) that was adorable, so it was a chance to explore more of Ms. Yates’ backlist. What I got was a surprising little gem of a story that really well developed characters in a reimagined Beauty and the Beast setting. Zahir is the prince of Hajar, the only survivor of a terrible attack that left brother and parents dead, and Zahir badly injured and scarred. Katharine is the fiancee of the Zahir’s dead brother, and she has spent her whole life looking for ways to be considered more than a marriageable girl to her father. She has to protect her country from her ruthless relative who threatens to take over since her father is ill and her little brother is too young to assume the throne, so she heads to Hajar to confront Zahir and hope that he will honor the marriage contract in his brother’s stead. Dealing with Zahir’s physical disabilities (he was left partially blinded and badly scarred), survivor’s guilt combined with legitimate PTSD, as well as Katharine’s complicated relationship with her father elevates what could have easily been a stereotypical romance. There are overwrought moments and your typical misunderstandings, but overall a very enjoyable read. I’d recommend it and I’m going to look for more Maisey Yates books. less
