review 2: I found the book really informative. The author didn't just offer engaging accounts of both US and Mexican authorities' multiple failed attempts to capture Chapo. He also wrote captivating background information of the Sinaloa region and culture, the narco lifestyle and its compelling image to many. My favorite part of the book was the chapter that explains the rise of El Padrino, his subsequent decision to divide the plazas between his associates and the consequent relationships and struggles that develop between the territory leaders. The story is fascinating and it brings an understanding of the current state of Mexico's criminal insurgency and how certain alliances or broken relationships have formed.Malcolm Beith also discusses something that I haven't yet read in other similar books. He writes about the surprising new generation of narco juniors who are sophisticated, well-dressed and highly-educated, defying the traditonal narco image of tough guys wearing gold chains and plated weapons. The story of Chapo, his personal traits, childhood struggle and path to becoming a skillful leader of one of the most powerful cartels (despite being illiterate) is fascinating. less
