review 1: I love this man's way of presenting information. My favorite approach is when he presents just enough information for you to formulate in your mind what must have happened -- what the circumstances were, what kind of person So & So is, etc. It's easy to get interested in the topic even if I don't have any first-hand knowledge of the topic. He then begins to pick apart why my first instinct is incorrect, by presenting various viewpoints of others who are experts in their arena. He then explains why some intuit A but really what happened is B, and how this inclination to intuit A is akin to another circumstance in life. For instance, there's no way to simulate the NFL; either a person can succeed in the NFL or they cannot, but there's no way to know for certain in advanc... moree. Likewise, there's no way to know who is a good teacher in advance of putting them into a classroom. These professionals have to be put into their professional arena, and allowed to demonstrate their skill set.So many fascinating topics in this collection, and I especially appreciated his comments in the preface, about how he finds interesting topics. He assumes everything is interesting. That's why essays on hair color, dog training, emissions testing, ketchup, homelessness, space shuttle disasters, and The Pill can all exist within the same binding. I want to sit down and go through it all again, just to see how much I remember or how my thinking has changed on account of Malcolm Gladwell and his ability to captivate and inform.
review 2: As with Malcolm Gladwell's other books, this book is a wealth of information that no one should have and yet he does and he shares it so well and easily. Even though this book is a compiling of older articles (some of which now need to be updated) the articles are still just as interesting and relevant as when they were originally published. I just don't understand how one writes as clearly and understandably as Gladwell does. Why can't we all be like him? less
