review 1: This is very good in depth study of an event that is usually given only a line or two. Mr Morris goes to many things written near the time to construct the story of an event that radically changed England and its future. He goes into the people and events that led up to the invasion and follows them afterwards to show the effects the Normans had on England and France. It was a very tumultuous time for England with Vikings from Norway and Denmark raiding and trying to conquer all or parts of England. Also of promises given and broken by the leaders of England that helped lead to the Norman invasion. This is a very readable telling of a little understood time.
review 2: This begins with the Anglo-Saxon England in the late 10th and early 11th century, and lea
... moreding up to the rule of Edward the Confessor. It then explains the events following his death and the contest succession of the English throne. It then follows the plot of William the Conqueror crossing the channel from Normandy and defeating Harald at the Battle of Hastings. Finally, it recounts the changes and struggles in post-conquest England up to the time of William's death.Overall I really enjoyed the exegetical analysis of the various sources and historical figures that comprise the record we have available for understanding these events. The author explains the context of each source, its author, any leanings they may have had based on church or political influences, and its impact on the veracity of the narrative it creates.Despite being a historical book, I was pretty captivated by the narrative presented. I think the author has done a remarkable job of maintaining this almost novel-like quality to the story despite its basis in historical document analysis.Highly recommended. less
