Il commissario Bordelli
review 1: I chose to try this series of books because I've been to Florence, but Florence didn't seem a very big player in this story. It is very Italian and if you like Commissario Brunetti in Venice or Inspector Montalbano in Sicily, you'll probably enjoy this series, too. I like the way the social life of Inspector Bordelli contrasts and combines with his working life, and it is all very Mediterranean. He's a nifty sleuth, too, with a helpful sidekick, Piras, who just happens to be the son of Bordelli's wartime chum from Sardinia. Set in the first half of the sixties, the war is not far from their memories and there is an agreeable nostalgic feel to this story. I must read more from Marco Vichi.
review 2: Ask yourself this question: what do you want from an Itali
... morean police inspector? He must have a heart of gold, a slightly off-kilter morality, must care more about food than his health, must be world-weary and yet obsessed with women. Inspector Bordelli ticks all the boxes in this first excursion for him, set in an unbearably hot Florentine summer. The murder of a rich elderly woman is more of a how- than a who- dunnit and it all rattles along quite nicely. There are some elements of a back story for the inspector which are quite disturbing and might make for more demanding sequels. less

I really liked this book. There is a dinner scene in it that made me want to join them.

An irritating book with inspector Bordelli being particularly irritating.

Well detective story can be very different just because it is Italian.

Almost but not quite on a par with Montalbano.
