review 1: Such an interesting, sophisticated, beautifully written book. The language reminds me a bit of Night Circus - paragraphs and sentences that you want to go back and read for the simple beauty of the text. Beginning in the future and moving back in time, the stories link together in subtle and deliberate ways. A particularly intriguing moment for me was the story about the artist creating a painting very similar to Midvinterblot by Carl Larsson, a painting that has always fascinated me. Highly, highly recommended.
review 2: In the first few pages, Sedgwick throws readers onto a plane in a futuristic world, and slowly develops a complex and shrouded story throughout the rest of the novel. Through rich narration, Sedgwick blends together the lifetimes of two chara
... morecters through intricate, but different storylines. Readers are first introduced to a journalist who travels to a peaceful, simplistic island called Blessed Island. The journalist, Eric Seven, begins to doubt the sincerity of the friendly inhabitants of the island and uncovers hidden secrets that leave readers on a cliffhanger at the end of the first short story. The narratives of an archaeologist, an airman, a painter, a ghost, Vikings and a vampire, and an archaic village subsequently follow, unfolding a combined story of love, family, and rebirth. At first, it is not clear how the first few short stories fit together, but I found myself piecing a puzzle together as I kept reading. Sedgwick contemplates relationships and overarching true love as a connecting theme throughout the individual narratives. Don’t be surprised if you finish Midwinterblood in one sitting. The various stories intrigued me so much that I could not put the novel down. If I were to explain any more of the plotline, I might give the story away, so I highly recommend that you read this novel for yourself to uncover the mystery behind Midwinterblood. It may be hard to make connections to the characters and stories initially, but Sedgwick’s inclusion of various occupations, relationships, and time periods makes the stories easier to enjoy, not repetitious and boring. less
