review 1: This novel absorbed my attention completely. The main event was Lydia's party, but very little of the action took place there. The book was full of the inner lives of the various women, which were full of reflections on life, and strangely compelling imaginary conversations. There is a theme of terminal illness and death, so it may not be a good choice for someone who has experienced a recent loss, but I found the story comforting, despite the sadness.
review 2: I was super disappointed in this one. The premise sounded so compelling.....a fifty-some yr old woman is throwing her annual after holiday party for her closest friends, only this year she has to tell them that she was recently diagnosed with cancer. The writing wasn't horrible. The characters weren
... more't the most vivid, but they did have some depth. The problem was in the pacing of the plot. It was just off. Luckily, it was a short book, otherwise I am not sure that I could have made it through. I did love the characters's connections with their dogs. less
