review 1: A beautiful story told in verse and in the voice of Daniel, who escapes from Nazi Germany because of his parents' sacrifice. He ends up in Cuba because no other countries will allow the Jewish refugees aboard the ship to enter their ports. Then we meet Paloma, whose father is charging refugees to enter Cuba while she secretly helps feed and shelter refugees. David also tells his story. He too is a Jewish refugee from Russia and another time and wants to help the newest refugees. The historical and author's notes add to this story.
review 2: I listened to this on audiobook, but I got fairly quickly that it was a novel written in poetry. If you're looking for a book about the Cuban experience during the Holocaust, I'm not sure this will satisfy you. It's got some
... more good historically-related fiction, and the character development is pretty good, but it's not a book that will round out a collection of YA Holocaust books. However, I do recommend it to YA teachers - teens like poetry novels, in my experience, and this one have enough about Cuba (for Latin students) and enough about the Holocaust (for curious students) and enough about parent-child relationships (for all students) that I can imagine a lot of mine enjoying it. less
