review 1: Engle, Margarita. (2008). The Surrender Tree: Poems of Cuba's Struggle for Freedom. Squarefish: New York.Newberry 2009The poems may be short but they are very moving. Set in 1896, the poems take you through the struggles of Cubans during this time. The main focus is on a nurse named Rosa. Rosa lived in hiding. The problem was that Rosa helped everyone and anyone, no matter which side they were on. She had a gift as a nurse and she used it to spread love and understanding in a time of hatred and chaos. I highly recommend this book, especially for a middle years level poetry book. the poems are easy to understand and emotional.
review 2: Freedom comes at a price. There have been wars to free the country, but Cuba still is not free. People have been rounded up in
... morecamps with no food and illness. Rosa has been taught to heal so she becomes a nurse and heals anyone who comes near. She falls in love with a man who helps her to care for those in need. This book was interesting because it was in poem form. Even th0ugh the words did not rhyme, it was still good. The views changed from page to page and it took me a while to catch on. The book was pretty clean but there was a lot of death seeing as it was a war book less
