review 1: Fefa has word blindness, or what we call dyslexia. Every time she tries to read or write everything gets jumbled. Her mother gives her a book filled with clean white pages and tells her to fill the book with all her wild thoughts. "Think of it as a Garden" little by little Fefa fills her wild book shakily at first but after a while writing in her book becomes easier. Filling her book as her family deals with all the struggles of Cuba in 1912.Written in verse this story is one that makes you smile. It is the fictionalized retelling of the authors grandmothers struggle with dyslexia.
review 2: This historical fiction book was written in prose and was very short. It told the story of Fefa (who was based on the author's grandmother) who lived in Cuba in the early
... more1900's. Because she had dyslexia (word blindness) everyone considered her stupid and made fun of her. But after her brother accidentally shot himself, he became her teacher as he recovered and it was she who figured out it was their farm manager who was trying to hold her brothers and sisters for ransom. This would be a no vote for me. less
