review 1: This story is told in the first person narrative from the protagonist's point of view. Fefa is ten years old and living in Cuba when the story begins. Cuba has just won its independence from Spain following the War for Independence. Fefa struggles with "word blindness," or dyslexia. In addition, the volatile political situation in her country provides anxiety and requires caution on the part of her family and all of its members. The story is told in the form of free form poetry through the use of symbolic language. The use of poetry by the author is particularly poignant given the protagonist's persistent struggle with words. Fefa's reading disability is compared to that of a garden needing work and perseverance to help it sprout and flourish. The author encourages p... moreerseverance, acceptance, kindness and understanding when dealing with individuals with differences.
review 2: A novel in verse written from the point of view of a dyslexic girl growing up in early 20th century Cuba. I have to comment on the cover: I think it's one of my favorites of all time. Just enchanting. The free verse is well-suited to the story of a girl who finds that words jump all over the page. For Fefa, free verse, a form that is free-flowing and unstructured, allows her to express herself more easily than either prose or rhyming poetry, both of which have rules she finds difficult to adhere to. A lovely book that would be interesting paired with another novel-in-verse featuring a dyslexic heroine, May B., by Caroline Starr Rose. less
