review 1: This book is about a young girl who stumbles over reading aloud in class. When she stumbles, her classmates laugh at her. In that moment she think reading isn't fun and that she will never be a good reader. She goes home and practices reading to her dogs. When she reads to them she doesn't stumble over her words and she feels confident about her reading skills. Later in class, she finds out that she had to read aloud in front of....her parents!!! She is so nervous about reading, but she keeps on reading to her dogs. The days comes to read aloud and she doesn't make ANY mistakes, but her friends that made fun of her slip up and misread words. I would use this text in my classroom for a few reasons. One would be that reading is fun and you can practice at home aloud, to your... more favorite toy, to your parents and even dogs! Practice makes perfect. Another reason I would use this book is to show my kids that reading isn't easy, and just because someone isn't picking it up easily doesn't mean we should laugh at them. Definitely a great book.
review 2: This book reminds me of Thank You, Mr. Faulker. The main character struggles with reading and her teacher and parents encourage her to succeed and continue practicing until she is ready to read! This book also shows good examples of guided reading groups and Reader's Theater in the classroom. The teacher in the story employs both of these methods of literacy in his classroom. A good book to encourage struggling readers. less
