review 1: I love this series, the plots are intriguing and always keep me hooked. This is yet another author who tells a great story and without the need to over-sensationalize and go nuts to wrap up her stories. This is the Inspector Knutas series, a down to earth policeman who is investigating the case of a missing archaeology student who disappears on her way back to her hostel in Gotland (Sweden. Just before this, someone killed and removed the head of a pony on a farm and Knutas is also working on this case. He soon starts to come to the conclusion that both events are connected, but he cannot seem to get a handle on the case and he is feeling increasingly frustrated. There is also the side story of Johan (a reported/journalist) and Emma, who we were introduced to in the first ... morebook of the series and their continuing relationship. Johans part always interlopes with the story, as he gets involved in reporting on the cases and doing his own investigations into the strange goings on in Gotland. I would highly recommend this series, but start at Book 1. (Unseen). This book also comes under the title, "Unknown" as well as being marketed as "The Inner Circle".
review 2: This is the third of the Anders Knutas mysteries set on the island of Gotland, in Sweden. I think it could be read as a stand-alone, but then the reader would miss out on the developing relationships between the characters and that relationship does account for some of the suspense. This mystery mixes Viking rituals with archaeology and modern real estate development. As always, Jungstedt does a fantastic job of making the reader feel as though she is on Gotland, in the scene. Characterization and location are very strong. I guess who the villain was before Knutas did, but it didn’t take away from the final exposition. The short chapters, moving between the perspective of Knutas, Jonah (the reporter), and the killer, helped increase the suspense. All in all this was a great book…the only thing keeping it from five stars is that I felt one scene, at least, was too closely reminiscent of a scene from the first in the series. There are two more books in the series, so I’m off to find the fourth. less

I enjoyed this book a lot, both the plot and to vicariously visit a bit of Scandinavia.

The third one of her book I read in 2 months. This was a real cliffhanger.
