review 1: Another really tidy mystery from Mari Jungstedt, featuring her very normal, pleasant police detective Anders Knutas and the staff of the Visby criminal police. I very much suspect that there is far more violent crime in Jungstedt's novels than there is in the real Visby or Gotland as a whole! These are workmanlike mysteries, and even if the "whodunit" aspect is a little weak sometimes (as in this one), there is a tidiness to the plot that is pleasing. Best of all is the setting: makes you want to summer on Gotland (though you would run the risk of being one of the noisy crowd the locals deplore)!
review 2: Although this book has truly horror-filled murders, creepy, damaged perps, and dark, dangerous, haunting forests, the emphasis is on the daily life of pol
... moreice on the isle of Gotland. Their routine pursuits, in particular searching for information in the cause of justice, become most interesting when accompanied by Inspector Knutas' musings on the behavior of his colleagues. Each character is so carefully drawn that the reader cares about their success, failure and possible murder. Archeology and mythology figure large in their lives and the working out of the plot. This is the 3rd book in the series. less
