review 1: After an NPR review was very curious about this book, an older Canadian novel with a reputation for weird "bear porn". It had that, but it was much more. Beautifully written and operating on several levels, it's the story of a woman's transformation during an isolated summer in the Canadian wilds. The bear is both actual and mythical. Patterns woven together very subtly and complex, nothing forced......I thought about this book long after I finished it, enough to look up and read other reviews. Interesting read.

Deemed a classic. A farfetched read, humourous but not memorable.
