review 1: If you have read this far you know the premise of the story - soul mates never meet until well down the roads of other lives. Since I have lived in the US for almost 25 years I have not read any of the author's magazine and newspaper articles so was not familiar at all with her work and found it to be a refreshing surprise. With so many dismal books about angst and misery crowding the shelves - both real and virtual - it is almost a relief to find a book that has, in no particular order, real characters, genuine charm, humor, good writing and a happy ending.Ms. Kavanagh dumps us as readers in the middle of a situation that almost all of us have been in, to wit, the relationship that feels as though it should be perfect but isn't. To those of us who have been lucky enough t... moreo have found our soul mates, there is a lot to recognize in this novel and I imagine that for those who haven't, there is reason to hope for better days."For Once in My Life" touches on real situations and makes them readable by using charm and emphasis to render them interesting. Thank heavens there are authors who understand that to write books which read too like real life is to make them dull. We all dream of having careers as jazz musicians or owners of successful vintage clothes shops or [insert fantasy job here] but the beauty of a book like this is that you believe you could actually do it and so you cheer for someone who does. Ms. Kavanagh's characters are real and engaging and though sometimes their missed opportunities are infuriating, the end result is as Mary Poppins would say "practically perfect in every way".Yes it's light, yes it's romantic but hooray for that. As a book that entertains and also makes you think about your life and your relationships with your significant other and your friends, this is a win. I absolutely recommend it and applaud the author for her debut novel. I will be buying the next one as soon as it hits the shelves. As they say in the US: you go girl!!
review 2: This is a a very entertaining read at the end of a busy day, to be enjoyed with a cold glass of Sancerre, a few olives and soft jazz playing in the background. Marianne Kavanagh has always produced intelligent, witty and well researched articles, on a variety of topics, and I confess to being a loyal follower. Very pleased to see her first novel and would gladly recommend it for this summer's holiday reading list!!! Now, go and get that glass of wine!! less
