review 1: 3.5 starsI’ve held off reading Angelo and Zach’s story because there were reviews saying there’s infidelity with this couple. Although technically true, the spirit of infidelity (breach of trust) was never crossed because Zach gave permission to Angelo and the act between Angelo and Cole was purely physical and really rather casual. Perhaps it helped that I knew Cole’s mindset about his hookups prior to reading this book since I read Strawberries for Dessert first. Actually, this event didn’t do any harm for Angelo and Zach; however it did hurt Jared and Angelo’s friendship. The big drama in this short story is Angelo’s reaction to Jonathan, Zach’s ex. Meeting Jonathan brought back fears, insecurities, and apprehension in Angelo that was starting to wane. In... more the months Zach and Angelo have been together in Coda, Angelo took large steps forward in his relationship with Zach..meeting Jonathan caused Angelo to take a huge leap backwards. I thought his immediate violent reaction was reasonable, but his running away from Zach to wallow seemed like a childish move and a little over the top. I also didn’t like Zach’s reaction to Jon especially since it was Zach who drove Jon to leave him 10 years ago with his drugs, drinking, and cheating. If anything I think it's Zach who owes Jon an apology. The one significant thing that happened in this book though was we got to see Zach fight for something, or rather someone. As I mentioned in my review of A to Z, I found Zach’s character to be lackluster, like he was just floating through life – but here we saw some strong emotional reactions from him and it was because he was fighting for Angelo. If I didn’t like Jon enough in his own book, I definitely like him better here especially when he stepped up and admitted he was wrong. His apology and conversation with Angelo was such a commendable moment – for both characters.
review 2: As a stand alone book (which this is NOT): 3.5 starsAs part of a series where the characters are consistent from book to book: 2 starsAudio book narration: 2 stars (though by this book 3 I have gotten used to how bad it is)Although the story was well written and the characters were believable, the turn in Zach and Angelo's relationship here was IMPOSSIBLE to believe. How Angelo acted and Zach's consent was totally inconsistent with anything I thought knew about these two from the prior book. And Jonathon. What an asshole. Having read Strawberries for Dessert first I cannot believe this is the same character I loved so much. Even the little bit we saw of Cole didn't jive for me.To the extent I could put the prior books I had read out of my mind, I really liked this one. But that's not the point of writing a series, is it? less
