review 1: Oestend is the dry, dusty and rather primitive ranch setting, set a long way from civilisation; not the kind of place you'd really want to end up working, particularly if you have the marketable skills of an bookkeeper! However Aeron quite likes it as whatever misgivings he has about his appointment are compensated by the presence of a sexy, muscular guy there. This muscular leader of the ranch hands falls under the banner of "big fisted", a little too big fisted if you ask me, however, that might just be me. Elsewhere there is the constant threat of murderous wraiths - as if the inhabitants didn't have enough problems. It's OK, quite liked it, but have to be honest and say it didn't really grab me that I was in the hands of a master wordsmith with this n... moreovel.
review 2: This is a well told story. Aren has been sent from academia to the wilds of Oestend. He must contend with wraits, ghosts and ranch hands. Deacon is the enigmatic boss who holds himself away from his hands and from the family who owns the ranch. Aren stands up to Deacon and earns his respect and they develop a friendship. The paranormal elements of this are so well done. Sexton has set up this world where no one can travel after dark and the sense of isolation and fear builds to a believable climax. less
