review 1: Despite its attention-grabbing title, the actual aim of the book is to explain the "unreasonable effectiveness" of mathematics and, along similar lines, to determine whether mathematics is "invented" or "discovered." I found the book to be at its weakest when attempting to actually address those questions, no doubt due to a lack of interest on my own part, but fortunately the bulk of the text consists of historical background and biographical sketches of famous mathematicians. I found many of those stories quite entertaining.

While I loved the presentation of most of the book, the content of the last chapter did not seem to flow as well, or do quite as good a job retaining my attention (or maybe it was the Christmas and New Year holidays over which I finally finished it?). In my opinion, the conclusion seems somewhat weak, detracting from the stated purpose of the book at the beginning. So deduct half a star. Overall, however, a great and entertaining read. less
