review 1: I did not like Madison AT ALL in this book. She got on my last nerve. She had no back bone. She was freakin' crying in every daggone chapter. Passing out in every other chapter and throwing up in a hit or miss chapter. Why? Because she's weak~! I could not stand her. She is a very immature character who cant make decisions about anything and doesn't question anything that she is told. This book really irked me because of main character, Madison. The last chapter is when she finds her back bone. Really? I like Rupert but I question why he's still with Madison. He seems like he is rescuing her, helping her, attending to her needs, and declaring his love to some one who's not worthy of all this. Yeah, I love a man who caters to his woman but can she reciprocate... more those feelings and actions. She doesn't talk to him for days because of a disagreement they had. She's too afraid to pick up the phone to try and discuss this like an adult. Rupert deserves better and maybe the ending of the book is just what he needed for his best interest. I gave this book 3 stars because of the Henry VIII ghost story line. That was main part of the book thatI felt was interesting and had strong characters. I will get book 3 just to see if Madison's character is developed more and to find out what happens with Rupert.
review 2: Oxford Shadows, the second book in the Oxford Trilogy, picks up shortly after Oxford Whispers (see here for my review) ends. Madison and Rupert have begun their relationship, navigating through the murky waters of family obligations. Rupert’s father doesn’t accept Madison because she isn’t a high enough class for his son while Madison’s voodoo heritage is coming out stronger making her life more difficult.Madison is attending a concert with Rupert’s family with a blood covered ghost sends a warning to her about Camille, Rupert’s pregnant step-mother: neither she nor the baby will long survive. In parallel to this encounter, Madison begins having dreams that involve a young woman in Florence and her lover, a young virile Henry the VIII.As Madison works to unravel the mystery of Henry the VIII and his link to Rupert’s family she also discovers more about her own history, specifically her importance in the voodoo religion circles.Once again, Croslydon takes history and weaves it into a tale of fiction so beautifully you think to yourself “sure, maybe that WAS why it was.” I loved the idea that evil Henry the VIII wasn’t that evil, he was just possessed by a vengeful spirit. The story kept me on my toes and I was waiting for the ultimate showdown between Madison and her new voodoo ‘family’ since it was becoming clear she wasn’t all that keen on exploring that side of her history.I would have liked a little more about her real father. There was a brief scene but it didn’t really answer all the questions so hopefully there is more in book three. And the ending was so upsetting. You want a happily ever after but I guess we can’t have it yet. What I really want to see in book three is Madison actually talking to Rupert. Be honest with the guy if you care about him so much. Stop hiding things, I think he gets the fact you aren’t “normal” ;)4 out of 5 starsI received an ARC of this novel for an honest review less
