review 1: A fun jaunt through the oddities of the English language looking at words which have fallen out of favour, or often have never found favour. The book doesn't seem to have a direction as the path it takes through its subject seems to be at the whim of where the next connection will appear. The writing is excellent, and, given the subject matter it never ends up feeling plodding or strained, a credit to the author's ability to move the whole process on with plenty of pace. And the really clever part is that the last chapter peters out by feeding naturally into the first sentence of the book, completing the circularity of the whole.I enjoyed this book so much on my Kindle that I went and got a copy for my Dad who I knew would also appreciate its subject ma... moretter.
review 2: I haven't actually finished this book. But the author's writing style makes me want to throw it across a room; the information it contains is superficial and so frivolous that I don't feel like I'm getting anything out of it for the time I'm spending on it; it's hugely disappointing.I would not recommend this book. Unfortunately, I was lent it by a co-worker who is inevitably going to ask me what I thought... less
