A couple weeks ago I wrote about the new 7″ “Flesh & Bone” from Chicago musician Dan Rico. Saturday night I got to see him live and it was great. The vibe on stage completely matches the fuzzed out honky-tonk you hear on the record. I referred to it to a friend as “dirty Elvis,” and I think that fits pretty well.
I hadn’t been to Cafe Mustache in a few years, and they’ve really upped their game. Last time I was there I saw a little singer/songwriter round robin where they all took turns playing songs. They were set up right next to the bar, with seating for about 20 people. They’ve expanded into the space next door, with a nice stage and light setup, and the sound is fantastic. I got there early and sat at the bar, which had a perfect view until a guy came and stood right in front of me (he moved a couple minutes later, so I was able to see everything).
The place filled up with friends and fans alike, as Dan Rico played the part of “Neighborhood Boy Makes Good.” He left no time for messing around, jumping in to a ten-song set with the power of a tornado. Whether he was shredding on the guitar or belting out impassioned yelps of past love, there was never a dull moment during the set.
