review 1: The Gendarme is a wonderful historic fiction novel that showcases the emotional and physical struggle of Emmett Conn, a Turkish gendarmerie deserter who rebuilt his life in America. With few memories to construct his past, he assimilates into American culture and raises a family that struggles to keep together. After being diagnosed with a tumor at 92 years old, Emmett begins to experience vivid dreams that he eventually recognizes as memories. These chronological dreams lead him to a point where he must face his demons and confront his deepest regrets. A lightning-quick read, the Gendarme is a story that is sure to have you rooting for this controversial protagonist.
review 2: I would definitely NOT encourage anybody to read this. However, it was very geniu
... moresly written. Or maybe it was wannabe genius. I can't decide. One thing's for sure: I've never read anything quite like it and will be reading lighter material for the next while. "The Gendarme"--French for "policeman" or "soldier"--is an emotion and impression story--the information and action only serves to fuel what the main character is thinking and feeling. He's 92 and having post-amnesia PTSD-like episodes during which he remembers his part in the Armenian genocide in the early 1900s. Saying I "enjoyed" it would be wrong. I found very little pleasure in reading it and obviously hated what was usually going on. However, I did "enjoy" it in that I am glad I read it. That's why I gave it a 3-star. It's worth the read, but be careful. less
