review 1: This is an exceptionally enjoyable food book, tracing the author's experiences traveling the world trying to find the best steak, and trying to understand why steak can range from transcendent to merely food (and sometimes shoe leather). Mr. Schatzker is a very funny writer, and he succeeded exceptionally well at what he claims is basically impossible, to describe the flavor of something as complex and subtle as a grass-fed steak.
review 2: This book has kind of a pop-non-fiction-by-numbers feel to it. It's got all the requisite pieces: the author on a very ill-defined quest that lets him expense a lot of plane flights, the steady accumulation of expert guides from different backgrounds, the university studies and science filler, and the explanations of how the
... more story of some random thing is also the history of all mankind. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just that the ceiling on this book isn't that high. It's also shocking how little I learned about steak for a book that is ENTIRELY ABOUT STEAK. Serviceable at best. less
