review 1: This is one of the best books on nutrition and exercise that I have ever read and I've read quite a few. The formula that he gives you is simple and straightforward. It's easy to put into practice and most importantly, it works. I made the full commitment to paleo/primal eating three months ago and with very little effort I lost 15lbs without ever feeling like I was hungry or deprived. I've also gotten into much better shape and without being at the gym for hours on end. Basically this book is about eating and exercising smarter, not harder.
review 2: A typo-ridden self-published mess. I got only 40 pages into it, then skimmed the rest. Not to be taken as someone who values style over substance, I also found substance - well - lacking. There aren't nearly e
... morenough sources for this kind of claim, and although it does make sense, I need more than just his word to be a believer. He makes one fatal mistake - which happens to be a pet peeve of mine: romanticizing the past. He almost waxes poetic over how healthy paleolithic humans were. To his credit, he does mention disease, predation, infection, and accident as possible preventable causes of death in "cavemen" that we don't have to worry about. But I really think he misses the seriousness of it. Significant time and energy was spent, every day, just to survive. Grok and his family could easily have starved to death during winter instead of waking to eat those berries and roots. How idyllic. To be honest, this 300+ page tome could be whittled down to probably less than 100 pages of good, well-presented information. There's so much repeating and filler that I gave up on it - I can't tell you how many times I said, in my mind, the old Monty Python standby: "GET ON WITH IT!" Unfortunately, he never does. My time on this spinning blue rock is short - and I have better things to be spending it on. If he were willing to do a condensed version, without the cutesy caveman stories, I could be enticed to crack it open, though. Keep in mind that I already follow this way of eating - 70-80% of the time - and wanted a refresher. I'll stick with rereading The Paleo Diet - less fluff, more substance, and better written (I actually got all the way through that one!).One anecdote in the beginning was telling - he relates that his inability to find a publisher for his book might have been partly because he wasn't a doctor. Obviously, he must have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.I'd recommend this book for people interested in diet/exercise, who have infinite patience, and no other books silently begging for their attention. less
