review 1: These are like...cozy mysteries for YA...with vampires and werewolves and witches and zombies and a whole host of other things. This book is the start of a second series within the series. The main character Daisy from the books that came before is college bound, so this takes us next door to Jessica.Jessica has just recently learned that she's a virago--sort of a female warrior who protects a town or whatever location she's in.They have tattoos that let them know when trouble is near, and new ones appear during their time as active viragos. Just as enjoyable as the ones before with Daisy and her sisters. Quick and easy without a lot of brain power expended, even if the mysteries are usually at least a partial surprise when everything is revealed at the end.I was also g... morelad to see that the jukebox--even though it stopped playing it's prophetic music--sort of lives on in Dominic who sings random songs that also prove to be prophetic. (Inconvenient when he's on stage with the band he's a singer for and he sings something that isn't what they're playing and they aren't that familiar with.)
review 2: I read the first five books of the Dead Is series, and I had no idea that this was a spin off when I started. I went into this book thinking that I would still be reading about Daisy Giordano. I was shocked when it was about Jessica Walsh, Daisy's boyfriend's, Ryan, best friend's, Sean (also, Daisy's best friend's, Sam, boyfriend), sister. At the end of the first five books, Daisy was graduating high school, which was a more mature point of view compared to an incoming freshman, Jessica. I still love the story, but I was shocked to figure out the story of Daisy ended. I quickly adjusted to Jessica, though. I had to learn about viragoes, female warriors, after being used to a paranormal telekinetic, psychic, and mind reader. Definitely read this book if you have read the Dead Is series with Daisy or if you just want a light easy read. less
