review 1: I'll be straight up; I wasn't expecting to like these book as much as I did. And I say that because what I guess could be categorized as 'Street Literature' or whatever usually isn't my style, in large part due to the language and the subject matter. If I didn't know the author personally, I probably wouldn't have picked this book up. But I have to say, I'm glad I did. While I still wasn't crazy about the language (and this is a personal thing of mine, I know), I ended up loving how this book developed. The lead character, Beata Douglas, really evolved and matured and I loved seeing it. She went from a too-grown-for-her-age teen to a successful and even somewhat humbled adult, and really, I was surprised by that. I was surprised by her relationship with Kane, and just how ... moredark Roc was. I don't want to give anything away, but I'll just say that I went back and re-read the hotel room scene more than once because I loved it so much. I'm a person who loves seeing people get what they deserve in a story, and it only endeared me to Beata even more. Another thing I was taken in by was the evolution of Kane; how he went from being a street-rapping sidekick to one of the hottest rappers in the game. I found myself picturing him, and even rooting for him because he was hard but still caring and sincere. That was a wonderful mix for me. If I had one critique, it would be that the book could have been edited better. There were quite a few simple errors throughout the book that caught my eye, and for a lot of people, that can take away from the experience of the story, even if they're enjoying it.This book also reaffirmed what I've already said before that I wouldn't want to have anything to do with the music industry. I'm sure that a lot of the things Beata went through during her rise to the top happens every day, and it's sad that that kind of stuff is required and tolerated, even for people who are talented enough to where they should be able to ride off that. But hey. I'm just a writer. :)
review 2: Ooohhh I absolutely loved this novel. I think Mccaulsky did a fabulous depicting the lives of Kane and Beata. I can honestly say that outside of K'wan I really don't read any urban lit novels by male writers simply because I find that often they are not well written. But I have to admit that I was blown away by Mccaulsky's ability to keep my attention throughout the novel. Readers meet the drop dead gorgeous Beata Douglas when she's a 14 year old lovesick puppy and Mccaulsky takes us through her adolescent years into a relationship with a dangerous man (Roc), onto her success as a sexy, cutthroat video vixen which catapults her into her life as a successful singer-songwriter who captures the affection of Hip-Hop's hottest gangster rapper, Kane. I appreciate that Mccaulsky tells the story of a troubled young woman without resorting to the typical storyline we read in novels by Vicki Stringer, Wahida Clarke, Allison Hobbs, and even Erick S. Gray. There is something different about this book that is refreshing and shows where Hip-Hop/street/urban literature can go if these writers would simply write books and NOT set out to create these elaborate plots that piece together like screenplays. I look forward to reading more of Mccaulsky's work in the future. "From Vixen 2 Diva" does not disappoint. less
