review 1: This twisted romance is a good read. Angel gets hooked on "candy." And is forced to do things she does not want to do. Call is an evil being of nature, that is her "boyfriend," and he has threatened to do bad things to her family. Vancouver Downtown Eastside is where all this goes on. One day he brings home Melli a little girl to do the awful business. Angel has to think of away to get Melli and herself out of this hell hole. What will happen next read to find out. If you like books with avast paced, serious theme this book is the one for you.
review 2: Martine Leavitt writes My Book of Life by Angel. A fictional memoir of a 16-year-old girl, Angel, and she is known for shoplifting a shoe from many stores. She only takes one display shoe when she shoplifts. An
... moregel’s family life is a bit of a struggle. Her mother died when she was younger, and her father suffers from severe depression. Angel meets a boy named Call; she feels that she has met somebody who actually understands her. She moves in with him and starts getting involved with drugs, which is referred to as candy in the book. With the influence of Call, he puts Angel to work the corner as a prostitute. Angel tries to get out of this business by not doing drugs anymore but she becomes dope sick. As a result she becomes irritable and turns away customers, she starts making less money. Call brings Melli, an 11-year-old girl, and wants Angel to be her mentor that way he can make more money for his business. Angel wants to save Melli from the horrid lifestyle that she lives; she does this by not letting Melli take drugs or be with the men who are paying for services. Angel and Melli find relief when a police officer comes to them as a customer. The police officer cannot afford the services as Angel makes him a deal by asking for a pin and watch instead. Angel and Melli then go to the police station and are taken back to their families finally. Drugs and prostitution are heavy subject for a book, but it creates awareness about the lifestyle of a prostitute. Leavitt discusses in her authors note at the end of the book about how the characters are made up, but many parts of the story are true. In 1983, many women went missing who were involved in prostitution. Leavitt is not proposing a solution to prostitution, but she is advocating for women to stay out of this lifestyle because it can be deadly. less
