review 1: I've read many books on healthcare in the U.S. I always like to fantasize, while reading, that if I were a doctor I would carry myself much like Marty Makary does. Honest, kind, has a consience, likes to think about how his words and actions as a doctor affect his patients. This is a great book about the need for accountability and transparency in hospitals. Information and statistics are not readily available and patients who haven't done very thorough research often get lost in the mess and follow blindly whatever is recommended (exhibit A, my C-section experience). I learned how to read information on hospitals, ask the right questions of the right people, and about resources that will shine light on the better and worse hospitals for any given procedure. My only proble... morem is that the author constantly advises the patient to ask hospital staff about the performance of certain doctors or the hospital as a whole. In the next breath he defends his secrecy about the very topics when asked about these questions (fearing admonishment from higher-ups.)But overall a very informative and eye-opening read.
review 2: Saw this guy on 20/20 which is why I wanted to get the book. A doctor and surgeon himself who has worked in some of the best-rated hospitals in the U.S. gives the inside scoop on what really goes on inside hospitals. It's terrifying. But he didn't do it to scare us, he did it to empower us - all of whom will be patients at some point. Some of the advice he gives SEEMS like common sense, such as, "Ask the nurses or hospital staff 'If you had to get xyz done, would you be treated here?' yet during my mom's stroke ordeal I never once thought to ask that of a nurse. I literally think this book could save your life. less
